Christo Manolakev Money and Sentimental Love
Summary
The paper studies the appearance of money in the plot
of three 18th century Russian short novels: the anonymous
“Kolin and Liza”, N. M. Karamzin’s “Poor Liza” and A. Klushin’s
“Unhappy M-v”. This meeting of love and money is influenced by the
two famous novels of J.-J. Rousseau “Julie, ou La Nouvelle Héloïse”,
and Goethe’s “Die Leiden des jungen Werther”. But because of the
different ideological situation in Russia, the social sharpness
in those texts is softened up through the presence of ethical and
religious in the discourse of the sentimental suicide.
